Thought I was done with having to change numbers

But I just found an unfortunate typo in a Pinpics number that meant I double counted another pin. I'm going to have to add double checking all the Pinpics numbers are accurate to my clean up list.  Ugh...2000 numbers to double check.

Total pins identified: 2065

Where are we Going? Redux

Time for another "Where is this blog going" type post.

At this point, I've inventoried over 180 images, including all the images on the Dizpins scrapper page.  I've also cleaned up my database so the nomenclature should be more or less consistent.  There are probably a few rouge blank spaces, and spelling errors.  I've verified that the total pins identified count is accurate.

I've built many of the pages to break down the master list into usable chunks for pin collectors to digest. With the pages I've done so far, I still have 587 of the 2066 pins to organize.  These pins are mostly Disneyland and Walt Disney World open edition pins, with some limited edition.  I'm still trying to decide how I want to break these down.

So what's next?

I'd like to get back to cataloging images.  I have a stack of 30 sheets of paper with images waiting to be inventoried, and then posted to the blog.  20 of these pages are from images that were only posted in mid-July and contain many 2011 - 2013 pins.

I need to find a solution for the master list.  Blogger choked on trying to save a straight listing of 2066 pins, so I will have to store a file off site and then link to it.

Figure out some logical method of breaking down the remaining pins.  And this will probably result in some additional nomenclature cleanup as I verify which pins were released only at DLR or WDW and which were released in multiple places.

So the blog is getting there!  I'm feeling more confident that if I start posting the link that it will be something that is somewhat useful to people, and not just a boring list of Pinpics numbers and pin names.

The DLR Global Lanyard Series debuted April 2005.

This series also marked the debut of the silver Hidden Mickey that appears on the front of a lanyard pin.

Complicating the organization of this series, is that some pins for series released at Disneyland were released in Walt Disney World.  Thus, the designation "Global" lanyard series.  For the purpose of this blog, DLR pins will be pins that are part of series originating at Disneyland, and will include those pins physically available at WDW. By organizing them in this manner, they will match the checklists available on the Disney Parks Merchandise blog.

In 2011, Disney started releasing Hidden Mickey pins in two waves.

Wave A debuted in early 2011. Like in 2010, some pins were released both at Disneyland and WDW. Disney also introduced "chasers" which are a sub-series of 10 pins that are the same design as other pins in the series, but contain no enamel.  These chaser pins are not shown in the official Disney listing for the 2011 pins

Because the 2009 Epcot Pin Event occurred in June and not the normal September timeframe, the 2010 Hidden Mickey pins did not debut at that event, as previous series had done at previous events.  This series debuted in early 2010.

Two sub-series were shared releases with Disneyland, and pins are designated with a DLR / WDW at the front of their names.

The Teddi Barra pin has two Pinpics numbers because both the authentic pin and an unauthorized version are listed separately in Pinpics.

The 2008 WDW Hidden Mickeys debuted in September 2007.

The Rowlf Muppet pin was remade after people noticed it was originally misspelled Rolf.  Both versions were released by Disney, and the misspelling, in and of itself, is not indicative of a pin offered by a Chinese Factory. Although, its appearance in an image, most certainly is.

Walt Disney World Hidden Mickey Series 2007

Note: The absence of a pin from this list does not mean that the pin has not been compromised. Only that it has not yet been found in an image from a Chinese factory.

At the 2006 Epcot Pin Event, Disney revealed they were changing the name of the pins only found on lanyards to "Hidden Mickeys."  The first year's pins would consist of previous releases, and all of them would have the Hidden Mickey symbol.

For our purposes, the addition of the Hidden Mickey makes it easy to separate the Cast Lanyard Series 1 & 2 pins from these new pins, and we can pick the correct Pinpics number.  The Pirate Coins were redone in silver not the original gold, so those were easy to separate.  But for most of these pins, the inventory lists both the original and re-released versions because the only difference is on the back of the pin, which can't be determined from the images.  Notes on Pinpics listings indicate that both versions seem to have issues, so I'm not too concerned about improperly listing a pin.  For this list, I'll only be listing the 2007 version's number, and the previous versions will be listed under their own collection's pages.

Note: The absence of a pin from this list does not mean that the pin has not been compromised. Only that it has not yet been found in an image from a Chinese factory.

The WDW Cast Lanyard Series 4 debuted September 2005.

Like the WDW Global Lanyard Series pins, some of the WDW Cast Lanyard Series 4 pins were re-released as Hidden Mickey pins in 2007, with the only difference being the back of the pin.  For the purpose of this list, only the 2005 Pinpics number is listed, but if you were to look at the image inventory you would see both the 2005 and 2007 numbers.

Walt Disney World Global Lanyard Series aka WDW Cast Lanyard Series 3

Note: The absence of a pin from this list does not mean that the pin has not been compromised. Only that it has not yet been found in an image from a Chinese factory.

The WDW Global Lanyard Series debuted September 2004.

There are a couple of issues complicating the organization of this series.  First, some pins for series featured at Walt Disney World were released at Disneyland and vice versa.  Thus, the designation "Global" lanyard series. For the purpose of this blog WDW pins will be pins that are part of series originating at WDW, so will include pins that were physically available in Disneyland. By organizing them in this manner, they will match the checklists available on the Disney Parks Merchandise blog.

Secondly, part way through the release of this series, Disney introduced the small silver Hidden Mickey icon that continues to grace the front of pins to designate them as "Hidden Mickey" pins. Some pins were released both with and without a Hidden Mickey, some pins were only made with a Hidden Mickey  Usually, the image is decent enough that I could notice the presence or absence of the Mickey, and I can list the appropriate Pinpics number. The checklist does not show which pins were released in which form, and you should consult Pinpics for variation info.

http://www.disneyparksmerchandise.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/WDW_2004_HiddenMickeyPins.pdf

Thirdly, in 2007 when Disney officially changed the name from "Cast Lanyard" Series pins to "Hidden Mickey" pins they re-released pins from the 4 previous series.  Sometimes, they changed the size of the pin, or added the Hidden Mickey so it was easy to determine which series the pin in the image actually was from. In other cases, the only difference between the 2007 and 2004 versions was the back of the pin.  Since I can't determine that from the images, those pins will be listed both under this series and the 2007 series.  For this page, I'm only listing the Pinpics number for the 2004 version, but if you were to look for the blog post inventorying the image where the pin appeared, you will notice both numbers are listed.

47 of 122 pins (including variations) in this series have been found in images.

Next up, blog posts for sub-types!

So I started building the pages that are linked on the top of this blog.  And quickly realized that the amount of data I need to present is far larger than I should be doing on those pages.

So new plan.

Like the boring image inventory posts, I will need to do blog posts for each of the sub-types.  Then in the pages, I can simply link to all the blog posts.  Far less data for people to try to digest in one bite,  So expect lots of posts like:

WDW Hidden Mickey 2009 Series

Wonder how long that's gonna take.

Getting back at it

Well, my best laid plans to finish the "clean up" in a timely manner, went along the wayside.  I did a quick scan of some of the marketplace websites and found 24 new images to save, print, identify and get on the blog.  So I better get back at it.

A little annoying news.  TradeKey which has been a primary source for images, has updated their search engine so now when you search for "Disney pin" it gives you a little note saying:

"Important: "Disney" is a brand name that can only be traded on TradeKey.com with proof of proper authorization. Please confirm with the supplier(s) before trading with them. "

Then it changes the search to what it would be without the brand name, so in this case "pin."  Which, as you could imagine, returns thousands of results, none of which are Disney pins.  You might think, "Good, someone's getting tough on counterfeiters."  But going back to the older links on this blog, those all still work.  So I'm not sure if the site is actually doing anything about counterfeiters selling products, or just covering themselves from liability.  There may be newer images posted, but I'm having trouble finding them.  I guess if it's harder for me to search, then it would be harder for the counterfeiters to sell their wares too.

That may be why, these new images all showed up on a different marketplace website.

Clean-up - Need to change the numbers

While cleaning things up, I realized that two pins were counted as new identifications, and were marked as "unknown," are actually known pins, which means they have been double counted.  Rather than redo all the subsequent posts. I am just going to use this post to drop the counter by two pins.  So we're at:

Total pins identified: 2072

I might go back and change all the posts later on.  So then the counter may not look like it dropped.

EDIT 7/27/2013:  Yep, I'm redoing all the numbers.

EDIT: 7/29/2013:  Good thing too. I made some math errors that I'm not sure quite what I was doing.  I should be through the clean-up in 2 more days.  I'm in the Dizpins image section now.

EDIT:  7/30/2013:  Really good thing. I realized I skipped a couple of pins altogether.  So our current number is:

Total pins identified: 2078

I've now gone through the "heavy duty" clean-up of the site.  The number is hopefully correct, but with such a large project, it wouldn't be surprised if there are still more errors.  I have a few more housekeeping steps that will hopefully reveal any additional issues.  And I want to finish them, before I add any more new images.

Next up, building the sub-lists like Hidden Mickeys, Vinylmation, etc.

EDIT 7/31/2013:  So I didn't get very far when I realized that the numbers were still messed up.  In the very early stages, I was relying on my memory to pick out the duplicates, and I missed a bunch. So pins were marked as new when they shouldn't have been.  Then there was a pin I didn't enter at all.  I think the numbers are correct now.  Or at least the couple different ways I ran through them, all add up to the same number.  So finally:

Total pins identified: 2067

EDIT 8/1/2013:  And one more change.

Total pins identified: 2066

Clean-up

Now that the Dizpins images are done, I've been working on cleaning up the nomenclature and the format of the blog posts.  I've started with the oldest blog posts and am currently working my way forward in time.  At the time of this post, I've updated 32 posts.  So about 1/6th of the way done.

This phase will probably take about 2 weeks to complete.  Then I'll go back to listing some new images.  As I've been cleaning things up, I've found a few images I didn't have the documenting screenshots.  As well, as some more single pin listings, and a few larger images that I didn't have.

Dizpins - Individual Pins

Finally, the rest of the individually listed or referenced pins on the Dizpins Scrapper Image page.  This list starts with the four counterfeit Disneyland Attraction Posters and then works its way down the page. A few of the pins are currently listed as "unknown."  Since I am so close to finishing, I did not spend as much time searching on Pinpics as I did when I first started this project.  During Phase 3 "clean-up"  I'll be trying to search for the remaining "unknown" pins.

Incredibles Logo in last row is tentatively identified as 44899.  There are three logo pins, but this one is the open edition pin, which is most likely origin to have an issue.

Woody pin is unknown, there are just too many pins that are similar to identify from a photo.

The Minnie in row 1 is currently unknown.  There are a lot of Minnie's to sort through, so I'll come back to it later.

Also, the Lightning McQueen in the last row is tentatively identified as 46364.  There are many McQueens of this style, but that one is the basic open edition pin.

This image is a bit different from the others because it lists zipper pulls from Tokyo Disneyland that have been converted to pins. I think I've managed to find a listing for each on Pinpics.  Some have both the converted pin and the zipper pull listed.

The second half of the image are a series of WDW Surprise pins.  If my memories are accurate, it was some of these pins showing up on quantity on CM lanyards that started people wondering, what the heck was going on and introduced everyone to the concept of "scrappers."

The Mickey pin in the last row, marked as "12" is tentatively identified as 2302.  With as many stand alone Mickey pins as there are, it's hard to make a positive identification.  Also, there are 2 pins similar to the Snow White Shield marked as "14."  42489 is the one with the Pinpics warning, so that's what I've listed, but I should probably include the possibility that it is Pin 42873.

Moving on to Phase 2

Well, I still have a few scraggler images, but I keep finding more single pin images, so waiting to find everything may take a long time.  In the meantime, I've finished identifying the pins on the Dizpins images, so we're going to move on to Phase 2, and come back to the odds and ends single pin images afterwards.  There are, I think 45 Dizpins images, plus a bunch of singles.  Hopefully, I can pound through these images quickly.  My goal is to finish it all in a week, and then I can get into a regular search pattern to look for images I don't have yet.

In the Dizpins stuff, there seems to be a fair amount of newly identified pins.  A lot of older Cast Lanyards, Hidden Mickeys and open edition pins.  First, I'll do the large images and then hit all the single pins at the end.

Continuing some Xiang Biao Bei Qi cleanup.  This is the first of a set of 4 small images, that I had skipped over, because I figured the pins would be identified in larger images.  That turned out mostly to be the case, but this one had a couple new.  And in general, I decided to put all the images on the blog, even if the pins were duplicated.

Older CL's, newer HM's, and some miscellaneous

When I originally pulled the images off the Better Finish website in January, there was a second image that isn't there now.  Luckily, the page was archived by the Internet Wayback Machine, and so I was able to grab a link to a cached version of the page, for more documentation.  I'm not sure if there are other archived images waiting to be discovered, but that's a project for another time.

More random stuff

So after our detour on Lihao Badge's website, one last thing.  Double check to make sure you've gotten all the images.  Some of them like to "hide" as alternate images on the image viewer.  So back to Trade Key we go, to discover a couple more larger images hidden under one listing.

I could not identify the Mickey pin next to the Kermit Mini Pin.  I'm sure it's in there, but I  wanted to get this stuff posted, and not look at 3000 Mickey pins.  When I get caught up, I'll go back to check.

Continuing mini tutorial from previous post...

Then I look for the name of the company and if they have a webpage, which they do here: http://www.lihaobadge.net/  So what do we find when we poke around over there...more images including some that we had seen over on Trade Key.

Princess pins, California Adventure, unknown Happy Birthday

This is a listing of 4 images from the same supplier.  They each have their own link, so I'll list them all.  But I didn't think we needed 4 different posts to cover such few pins.  The Aurora we've seen before.  If you click through to the listings, also shown is a Minnie in a blue dress.  But if you zoom in, it looks like a charm.

Can't find the Happy Birthday pin in Pinpics, so I don't know if that one just wasn't released, or if I'm blind :)
